Who Buys Used Server Memory
GTR Supply buys used server memory in bulk, quoted against the module part number and the quantity behind it. We take RDIMM, LRDIMM and ECC UDIMM from server platforms, unbuffered UDIMM from desktops and workstations, and SODIMM from laptops and small form factor machines, across DDR3, DDR4 and DDR5. Matched kits pulled together out of one machine are worth flagging as kits rather than as loose sticks. Send the memory either way you prefer: still installed in the servers, or pulled and boxed. Both are accepted, and neither is treated as the better option, so choose whichever costs you less labour. What the valuation actually turns on is how many modules share a part number. Fifty of one part number is a straightforward line. Fifty part numbers with one module each is a much harder lot to place, whatever the total capacity adds up to.

- The module part number, which is the single most useful field on the sheet
- Quantity against each part number
- Capacity per module, not the total capacity of the lot
- Speed, as printed on the module label
- Rank, where the label states it
- Module type: RDIMM, LRDIMM, ECC UDIMM, UDIMM or SODIMM
- Whether the modules are still in the machines or already pulled
Missing some of it?
Send it anyway and write unknown against the gaps. An honest gap is easy to price around. A wrong specification found at collection is what forces a valuation to be revised.

Identify what you have
Most of what a valuation needs is a model number read correctly. The catch with Memory (RAM) is that the number sits in a different place on every manufacturer's hardware, and reads differently once you have found it. These pages show where it physically is, how to read each field in it, and what the fields mean. They are identification help rather than stock lists. If typing the list is not realistic, a photograph of the right label is usually enough.

What moves the number
Up, and down.
Condition is only part of it. Most of what decides a valuation is how the lot is put together and how accurately it is described, and both of those are still in your hands when you write the list.

- Larger capacity modules, which are harder to replace than small ones
- Part numbers read off the module label rather than inferred from the server model
- Current DDR generations, which have a wider set of buyers than legacy stock
Moves it down
- A long tail of part numbers with one or two modules against each
- Small capacity legacy modules, which take longer to place at any grade
- Kits broken up and mixed into a general pile before the list was written
- Bent or contaminated gold contact fingers on the module edge
- Missing or unreadable labels, since the part number is then unrecoverable without testing

Selling Memory (RAM), answered.
Should I pull the memory out of the servers before selling it?
Either way is fine. GTR Supply takes memory still installed in the machines and memory already pulled and boxed, and neither is treated as the better option, so pick whichever costs you less labour.
If the servers are being sold as complete nodes anyway, leaving the memory in is the obvious choice. Nothing is gained by opening 40 lids.
If the chassis are staying with you and only the memory is leaving, pulling it is equally acceptable. In that case handle the modules by their edges, keep them in antistatic trays rather than loose in a box, and do not stack them so the gold fingers press against one another. Contact damage is the one thing that genuinely reduces what a module is worth, and it happens during handling rather than during service.
Whichever way you go, keep matched kits together and say on the list that they are kits.
Where is the part number on a memory module?
On the white or coloured label stuck to one side of the module, usually the longest alphanumeric string on it. It is not the serial number and it is not the capacity, though the capacity and the speed are normally printed on the same label just above or below it.
The label also tells you the module type. Look for the letters R, L or E, which indicate registered, load reduced and ECC, and for the speed rating, which appears either as a frequency in MHz or as a PC style code.
If the modules are still in a running machine, the operating system or the management controller will report the part number for every slot at once, which is far quicker than opening chassis and reading stickers.
One clear photograph per part number plus a count is enough for GTR Supply to work from. You do not need to photograph every stick.
Do you buy mixed memory, or does it all have to be the same?
Mixed is fine, and mixed is what most decommissions actually produce. It just needs listing by part number rather than as one total, because the count against each part number is what a valuation is built from.
The reason is straightforward. Memory is bought to fill specific machines, and a buyer filling a server needs a set of identical modules, not a bag of assorted ones adding up to the right capacity. Two hundred of one part number can populate a batch of servers. Two hundred modules spread across sixty part numbers can populate very little, even though the total capacity is the same.
So group your list by part number and put a count next to each. If there is a long tail of single modules, put them at the bottom as one line described as assorted and leave it there.
We will still take the tail. It is the grouped lines that carry the number.
Do you buy desktop and laptop memory as well as server memory?
Yes. GTR Supply buys unbuffered non-ECC UDIMM from desktops and SODIMM from laptops and small form factor machines alongside server RDIMM, LRDIMM and ECC UDIMM.
List them separately from the server memory, because they are not interchangeable and mixing them into one line makes the whole line harder to price. A board expecting registered modules will not start with unbuffered ones installed, and the reverse is equally true, so the module type is not a detail that can be worked out later.
Desktop and laptop memory usually arrives as part of a fleet clearance rather than on its own, and it is worth including even when the machines themselves are being sold, since a fleet lot with the memory left in is simply valued as a fleet lot.
If you are unsure which type you are holding, photograph the label. The module type is readable from it.
