Bulk Storage Array and Disk Shelf Supplier

We supply storage arrays, disk shelves and JBOD enclosures in volume, from a single shelf through to a complete array with a redundant controller pair. Stock covers SAN and NAS heads, expansion trays, spare controllers, cache modules and array power supplies, together with the drive sleds, blanking sleds and rails that decide whether an enclosure is usable when it lands. Shelves are supplied populated or empty. A populated shelf is quoted against its drive population broken down by capacity and interface rather than as one total, because a shelf of nearline SAS and a shelf of high capacity enterprise flash are not the same purchase. Empty shelves are worth asking about in their own right, since matching shelves for a platform already installed in your rack are usually harder to find than the drives that go in them. Every unit is tested and graded, drives are securely wiped, and the lot ships against a manifest listing controllers, shelves and drive population.

Storage is the one category where the secondary market is driven by end of sale and end of support dates rather than by hardware failure. Platforms leave vendor support, whole estates are replaced in one project, and the controllers and shelves land in the trade in quantity at exactly the moment the organisations still running that platform start hunting for spares. That is why the families below are dominated by legacy midrange block storage, Dell PowerVault, Compellent, VNX and Unity, HPE MSA and 3PAR, IBM Storwize, rather than by current flagship arrays.

Dell PowerVault MD and ME

Dell

Dell's entry level block storage line and one of the highest volume families in any storage decommission. MD12xx and MD14xx shelves are plain SAS expansion sitting behind a server RAID card. The MD3, ME4 and ME5 heads carry their own controllers and present volumes over SAS, iSCSI or Fibre Channel.

How to spot it
Model is on the front bezel and the rear label. MD1200 and MD1400 hold twelve 3.5 inch drives, MD1220 and MD1420 hold twenty four 2.5 inch. ME4012 is a head, ME412 is its shelf.

Dell EMC SC Series, formerly Compellent

Dell

The Compellent platform, sold as SC after Dell acquired it and now past end of sale, which is exactly why it circulates. Controllers such as the SC4020, SCv2000 and SC5020 sit in front of SC200, SC220 and SC280 expansion enclosures. Suits sites still running the platform and buying spares.

How to spot it
Rear label carries the model. SC200 holds twelve 3.5 inch drives, SC220 twenty four 2.5 inch, and SC280 is a 5U dense enclosure. Controllers and enclosures carry separate model numbers, so record both.

Dell EMC VNX, VNXe and Unity

Dell EMC

The midrange unified line EMC sold before and after the Dell merger, and a staple of enterprise decommissions because so much of it was deployed and has since been replaced. VNX and Unity heads present block and file together. Their DAE shelves trade on their own as well as with the head.

How to spot it
The head is a DPE on smaller models and an SPE on larger ones. Shelves are called DAEs and come in three sizes: 3U fifteen bay 3.5 inch, 2U twenty five bay 2.5 inch, and 4U sixty bay dense.

HPE MSA and the D series disk enclosures

HPE

HPE's entry level SAN and the plain SAS shelves that go with it. The MSA line runs from the P2000 G3 through the 1040 and 2040 to the 2050, 2052, 2060 and 2062. D2000, D3000 and D6000 enclosures are JBOD shelves that hang off an MSA or a ProLiant.

How to spot it
HPE parts carry a six character option number ending in a letter, such as AJ941A for a D2700, printed with the serial. D2600 and D3600 hold twelve 3.5 inch drives, D2700 and D3700 twenty five 2.5 inch.

HPE 3PAR StoreServ

HPE

The tier above MSA, sold as a storage base of two or four controller nodes with separate drive enclosures behind it. The 7000 and 8000 series are what mostly circulates now that both are past end of sale. Nodes, enclosures and drives all trade separately.

How to spot it
Sold as a base with a node count, so a two node 7200 and a four node 7400 are different items. The M6710 is a 2U twenty four bay 2.5 inch enclosure, the M6720 a 4U 3.5 inch.

HPE StoreEasy and Dell PowerVault NX

HPE and Dell

File NAS heads built on standard rackmount servers with a Windows storage operating system preinstalled. StoreEasy 1650, 1660 and 1860 sit on ProLiant hardware, and PowerVault NX3230, NX3240 and NX440 sit on PowerEdge. They reach the market through the same fleet refreshes as the servers underneath them.

How to spot it
The badge says StoreEasy or PowerVault NX, but the chassis underneath is a ProLiant or a PowerEdge, so the server pull tab with its product number or service tag is still the precise identifier.

NetApp DS disk shelves with FAS and AFF heads

NetApp

The most widely circulated disk shelf line in the trade, leaving ONTAP estates in quantity with FAS and AFF heads alongside. Shelves sell without the head as often as with it. Drives pulled from them are formatted at 520 bytes per sector rather than 512.

How to spot it
Shelf model is printed on the front right ear cover. The rear module face says IOM3, IOM6 or IOM12, which is the 3Gb, 6Gb or 12Gb generation. Drives carry an X number.

IBM Storwize and Lenovo ThinkSystem DE

IBM and Lenovo

IBM's midrange block line, sold as Storwize V3700, V5000 and V7000 and continued by Lenovo under DS and later ThinkSystem DE names. All of it is legacy now, which is what puts it into circulation. Control and expansion enclosures share a chassis and are easily confused.

How to spot it
Identified by a machine type and model pair rather than a name, on the rear label. 2076 is V7000, and the model after it separates the boxes: 2076-324 is a control enclosure, 2076-12F an expansion.

Supermicro SuperStorage and JBOD chassis

Supermicro

The plain enclosure end of the market and the backbone of software defined storage builds. SuperStorage systems carry an SSG prefix and JBOD chassis a CSE or SC number. They come out of hosting and cloud refreshes and suit anyone building storage on a controller they already have.

How to spot it
Chassis number opens with the rack height, so 826 is 2U while 846 and 847 are 4U. In the backplane code A is direct attach, E1 and E2 carry one or two expanders, 6 or C means 6Gb or 12Gb.

Western Digital Ultrastar Data and dense top load JBOD

Western Digital and Seagate

Sixty to a hundred and six drives in 4U, loaded from the top with the chassis pulled out on rails. Ultrastar Data60 and Data102 are the volume names, with Seagate Exos enclosures alongside. They come out of object storage and archive builds and are heavy to ship.

How to spot it
Recognisable on sight. No front drive bays at all, a solid front panel, and drives standing vertically under a lid that opens once the chassis is extended on its rails. The bay count is in the name.

Storage Arrays questions, answered.

How do I know which disk shelves fit my array?

Send the array model and we will confirm it before you buy. Shelf compatibility is not settled by the connector, and a shelf that plugs in physically can still be unsupported by the head it is attached to.

Three things decide it. The shelf generation, because one array family is commonly sold with two or three different shelf models across its life and they are not interchangeable. The controller firmware level, which sets how many shelves a head will address and sometimes which shelf models it recognises at all. And the drive sleds, because sled design changes between generations even within one manufacturer, so a Dell shelf and an HPE shelf take different caddies and so do two Dell generations.

GTR Supply quotes storage against the array model rather than a general description for exactly this reason. Tell us what is already racked and what you are adding to it, and we will tell you whether the shelf in front of you belongs with it.

What is included with a disk shelf and what has to be bought separately?

A disk shelf is only usable if the parts that make it rackable and populatable are still with it, so the manifest states what is fitted rather than leaving you to assume.

The items that matter are the ones easiest to lose during a decommission. Drive sleds, one per populated bay. Blanking sleds for the empty bays, which are not cosmetic, because an enclosure with open bays loses its airflow path and runs the remaining drives hotter. Both power supplies rather than the one that happened to be seated. Fan modules. The expansion controllers on the rear, and the SAS cabling that links the shelf to the head or to the next shelf in the chain. Rails, and a bezel if you want one.

Tell us which of these you already hold. Buying sleds and rails separately afterwards routinely costs more than people expect, and it is the most common reason a cheap shelf turns out not to be cheap.

What is the difference between a JBOD enclosure and a SAN array?

A JBOD is an enclosure of drives with no intelligence of its own. It presents the drives to whatever is attached to it, normally a host bus adapter in a server or a controller head, and the RAID, pooling and management all happen somewhere else. A SAN array has controllers that own the disks themselves, present logical volumes over a fabric such as Fibre Channel or iSCSI, and handle caching, tiering and redundancy internally.

The practical difference is where the intelligence and the entitlements live. A JBOD is simple and effectively vendor neutral once you have a supported adapter. An array head carries the firmware, the licensing and the vendor relationship, which is why heads and JBODs behave very differently once they reach the second hand market.

What testing and data wiping happens before a storage array ships?

Every unit is tested and graded before it ships, and every drive is securely wiped. A certificate of data destruction is available on request.

Wiping matters more here than in almost any other category, because an array is where an organisation deliberately concentrated its data rather than where some of it happened to end up. A populated shelf pulled from a production array has held real business data on every drive in it, not on one of them.

Each drive is therefore wiped individually rather than treated as part of a pool, and a drive that cannot be verified as clean does not ship as a drive. Test results and condition grades go on the manifest that travels with the lot, so a populated shelf is described drive by drive rather than as a bay count.
